The Daily Show Season 31 Episode 107
September 28, 2026 - Evan Gershkovich
Jon Stewart examines the limits of Republican loyalty to Trump after a weekend spent wooing President Xi with granite, helipads, and a White House ballroom tour. Will MAGA supporters condemn Trump’s offer to sell weapons to China, or is their outrage another Susan Collins-style performance? Wall Street Journal foreign correspondent Evan Gershkovich joins Stewart to discuss his memoir, This Cursed Beautiful Land: A Russian-American Story. Gershkovich reflects on the reporting that led to his 16-month imprisonment in Russia on false espionage charges, his Russian-American upbringing, life before prison, and how he became part of a Putin-directed prisoner swap. He also shares his perspective on a post-Putin Russia and the warning signs of rising authoritarianism he sees in the United States.
